As we emerge from recession many people are taking stock and reviewing their strategies and plans. These reviews are useful on both macro and micro levels. Teams will clarify their purpose in a way that fits within an overall organisational one. Reminding ourselves of what we are trying to achieve and how we are going about achieving it makes a lot of sense.
A mission statement, or purpose statement, is a valuable component in the mix of strategic planning tools for many organisations regardless of their size and nature. A community group or club, a primary school, a family run business and a multi-national (comprising many teams and departments) all have a purpose that holds together the people that run it and defines the direction they intend to take.
Some may argue that a good mission statement will stand the test of time and allow for creative growth while providing a focus within which that growth can occur. It may be felt that the purpose of an organisation is self-evident, and that a mission statement is merely a 'statement of the obvious'. Or we may consider the purpose is held in the heads of those with the most responsibility, and shared as a given. Others will argue that a mission statement should be revisited and refined, so as to engage people in ensuring it is living and dynamic and something they relate to.
Involving at least the principle stakeholders in defining (or revisiting) the purpose will enable their aspirations, perspectives and ideas to be encompassed in the mission statement, and thereby give them a greater sense of ownership and buy-in, which will help the organisation to succeed. Such a process of collaborative re-thinking can be readily supported using LVT, and an outline of a highly effective process is published in the LVT Knowledgebase. See Creating a Purpose Statement. This method has proven extremely effective as an aspect of strategy review. What have been your own experiences? Your thoughts and anecdotes on who, when and how to undertake a purposing process would be most welcome!

Happy New Year!
Thought it was time to create a blog for LVT. Here it is! We will be improving the blog functionality to enable comments and submissions from fellow practitioners, and automating a feed to the LinkedIn user group assuming that's technically feasible.
I hope 2010 is a great year for you, and that in some way the power of LVT can help you make it so!
