Here's an outline of an excellent process for engaging a group of people in defining their common purpose. What it will ensure is that the group have been engaged in grappling with the challenges and complexities of what they are there for and what the essence of their purpose is, and coming out with something tangible they can all agree upon.  Its a great way of starting to create alignment and a sense of collective intent in newly formed teams or when the goalposts have, or need to be, moved. You'll need to help them work on the outcomes to whittle them down into a concise one-liner if that's what you want.
